The Vancouver Vegetarian Association is a volunteer run, registered non-profit organization based in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Our objective is to spread the message that going vegetarian is the biggest change a person can make in their life to reduce environmental destruction, prevent suffering of both animals and humans, and to live a healthier, happier life.
Our outreach efforts often take the form of distributing flyers with information about vegetarianism, having info tables at festivals, designing advertisement campaigns, educational videos and public displays.
We also host social events for vegetarians in the Greater Vancouver area, including dinners, barbeques, potlucks and parties.
Our new Vegetarian Resource Centre gives people a place where they can learn more about vegetarianism, borrow books and videos, and connect with other vegetarians in the community.
History
Two local activists, Johnathan Skinner and Bridgette Gottschalk, formed a grassroots animal rights group called Vegan Voices in October 2001. They organized many vegan social events, animal rights demonstrations and public displays. The group went strong for about four years but found that it was difficult to get public support as a vegan activist group.
In August 2005, Vegan Voices was dissolved in favour of creating a more mature organization. The Vancouver Vegetarian Association was established and registered as a non-profit organization. No longer organizing grassroot protests, the Vancouver Vegetarian Association instead focuses on education campaigns and finds a much higher degree of public acceptance and a greater number of people choosing to go vegetarian.
